Power Out? Here's What to Check Before You Call an Electrician
Are Your Neighbors Out Too?
Start by checking outside. If your neighbors are also without power, the issue is likely with your utility company—not your home. Check the power company’s website or give them a call to report the outage.
Check Your Main Breaker!
Your main breaker may have tripped—this can happen during storms or when too many high-demand appliances are running. Go to your electrical panel, find the main breaker, and switch it fully OFF, then back ON. Sometimes a simple reset is all it takes.
Only One Room Out?
If just one room is affected, look for a tripped breaker or a GFCI outlet that needs to be reset. These are commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor spaces. Press the “Reset” button if it’s popped out and see if that restores power.
Were You Running Multiple Appliances?
Appliances like space heaters, air conditioners, and microwaves draw a lot of power. If too many are running on the same circuit, it can easily overload and trip the breaker. Unplug a few devices and try resetting the breaker again.
